Why choose recreational rowing?
The aim of recreational rowing is to enjoy being out on the river and to have exercise whilst in convivial company. There are no formal training sessions or commitments so it is ideal for those who don’t wish to compete; who are unable to be part of a squad; or who can only row occasionally. The emphasis is about having fun and rowing proficiently over a variety of distances and it is therefore entirely suitable for mixed crews of all ages and physical abilities. Recreational rowing usually involves sculling (with two blades) in stable boats to minimize any risk of capsize!
The benefits of recreational rowing:
The majority of recreational rowers have discovered the sport after looking for a new opportunity to have rewarding exercise in a fresh air environment. Some may have rowed previously but want to keep agile whilst continuing to be part of a group. Those with a disability find undertaking exercise in a seated non-stress bearing position to be beneficial. Invariably everyone gains pleasure from the chance to socialize either when in a boat or afterwards over coffee and (often) cake. Other social events include having a picnic on the bank at the half-way point, a night time row or a land-based social.
The opportunity to explore:
One of the joys of recreational rowing is to explore rivers elsewhere, often meeting up with other clubs with like-minded members. For example, the group organizes an annual row to Newark (a 37km journey with refreshment breaks along the way) and we take part in national multi-day touring events to different regions of the UK such as the R Thames, R Severn, major canal networks and to Loch Lomond. In recent years we have also gone abroad to reciprocate with clubs in Hamburg, Amsterdam and Venice (Vongalonga Regatta). Naturally, touring and visits to other places are optional extensions of what the group does.
The Recreational Group has two regular weekly sessions, on a Tuesday and Thursday morning. Recreational rowers pay a reduced subscription whilst still enjoying full access to all the facilities, including the gym.
