On Saturday, the National Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepont hosted the 2019 Nottingham City Regatta. For many years the regatta has been held in mid-May, but this year it was at the beginning of May which means that it clashes with other popular regattas. However, the entry was better than last year so the process of rebuilding the regatta has started. As it was the 150th anniversary of the regatta all the adult winners were given a mini bottle of Prosecco with the winners of the eight events being given special struck tankards as well. The Juniors were presented with a sports drink.
Saturday was fine but breezy with only a couple of quick and heavy showers. In the morning heats and finals, the Radley College eight was particularly impressive covering the 2000 metre course in a time of 5 minutes 52 seconds.
Nottingham University had a good day picking up 6 wins. Nottingham & Union won Women’s Junior 16 sculls and Junior 16 double sculls. Nottingham rowing club won Women’s open double sculls and it was Erica Hurst first win.
The Carl Smith Trophy was won by Joseph Bowles of Newark Rowing Club in the boy’s section and Leanne Abbott of Kingston Grammar School in the girls. Both received a cheque of £250 from the Carl Smith Fund.
